Fatal motor vehicle crash: Hummel & Smith roads

A Cleveland man, 63, died after crashing his car into a utility pole at about 7:30 a.m. June 13 at Hummel and Smith.

Police believe the man suffered a medial emergency while driving, before crashing his car. He was taken to The MetroHealth System in Cleveland, where he was pronounced dead.

A Brook Park man, 32, was taken to a local hospital at about 12:30 a.m. June 10 after he passed out at the bar inside AMF Brookgate Lanes, 14950 Snow.

When police arrived, the man was seated at the bar, his head resting on the counter. Two people were trying to wake him. Police shook him but the man didn’t awaken.

Police leaned the man backward and applied a sternum rub, pressing their knuckles on the center of his chest. The man awoke. He was so drunk he was incoherent and didn’t know where he was.

The man claimed to have consumed just ¼ of an alcoholic drink before the bartender cut him off. Police gave the man a citation.

A 45-year-old man living in Cambridge Court Apartments, 14915 Hummel, was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. June 8 after he caused a disturbance inside his apartment.

A family member called police and said the man was verbally harassing his wife and urinating on the carpet. The family member said the man had been drinking heavily for a few days.

As police drove to the apartment, dispatchers told them the man was wanted in Brook Park. When police arrived, the man was lying on the couch, pretending to sleep. Police ordered him to stand, but he didn’t comply.

Police removed the blanket covering the man and assisted him to his feet. He was naked from the waist down, so police helped him put on shorts.

A Brook Park man, 50, was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. June 16 after police found him drunk and unable to care for himself in a park on Gallatin.

Someone had called police about the man, saying he was passed out and surrounded by beer cans. When police arrived, the man was lying on the ground. They woke him, but the man refused to provide identification.

The man was disoriented and his speech was slurred. Initially he said he would allow paramedics to examine him, but then he became uncooperative, refusing to obey police orders.

A Brook Park man, 54, was arrested at about 1 a.m. June 17 after refusing to identify himself to police outside Metro Lexus, 13600 Brookpark.

Someone had called police and said the man was walking around the Metro Lexus parking lot, looking into dealership’s windows. He was pulling on door handles and holding a phone.

Police located the man behind Airport Infiniti, standing near a Nissan Xterra. The man said a friend owned the Nissan and that it was being repaired at the dealership.

The man falsely identified himself, giving police a made-up name and date of birth. Police asked the man for his real name and placed him in handcuffs. The man said, “I don’t want no smoke.”

The man told police he didn’t commit a crime but police said he was trespassing on private property. He complained that his blood sugar level was high. Police called paramedics, who confirmed the man’s blood sugar level was elevated and took him to Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights.

While the man was at the hospital, police identified him as a suspect in several recent crimes in surrounding communities.

A Brook Park man, 48, was arrested at about 3 a.m. June 18 after he was found inside a condemned house on Sylvia.

A citizen called police after seeing the man enter the property through the backyard. When police arrived, they saw a court-ordered sign, prohibiting anyone from entering, on the home’s front door. A window on the back of the house was open. Scuff marks, possibly from shoes, were on the siding beneath the window.

Police used a ladder they found near the home’s garage to climb into the open window. They found the man on a couch in the living room. He said he knew he wasn’t supposed to be there but had nowhere else to go. He said he used to live there.

A Cleveland man, 32, stole an electrical charging cord, bandana, hat and soft drink at about 4:30 p.m. June 7 from Circle K, 5878 Smith.

A manager witnessed the man stealing the items and called police. The man drove away in a Toyota. The manager gave police his license plate number.

Police searched the area but didn’t see the man’s car. The Circle K manager didn’t want to press charges but wanted the man banned from the store.

Police traced the license plate number to a home on Erwin Avenue in Cleveland. When they arrived, the Toyota was in the driveway. On the front seat in plain view were some of the stolen items.

Police knocked on the home’s front door. The man’s father answered. His son, wearing the same clothes he was shown wearing in Circle K security video, came to the door. He returned all the stolen merchandise to police.

A Euclid man, 22, was cited at about 6:30 p.m. June 14 after police caught him driving with a suspended license.

A Brook Park man, 24, was taken to Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights at about 8:30 p.m. June 16 after he overdosed on narcotics in a home on Settlement.
